Greek New Year's Food Traditions
Every region of Greece has their own traditional favorites this time of year when it comes to food, but all over Greece, New Year's is celebrated in great fashion with lots of good food! It not only symbolizes the beginning of a year, but holds a lot of meaning to the Greeks regarding a day of luck and looking forward to a year of prosperity, health and happiness. It is a day to acknowledge all the blessings received and to pray for them to continue into the new year.
Pork or Lamb Dish - the main course is usually a big roast of pork or lamb. You can also find a tasty beef stew being made with tomatoes, fresh herbs, pearl onions and garlic.
Vasilopita - a vanilla cake is served for dessert, with a hidden coin placed inside. The cutting of this cake is very ceremonial. The first slice cut goes to God, the second goes to the household, and then every slice there-on is assigned to a member of the family, from oldest to youngest. Whoever gets the coin in their slice will have an extra blessed year.
