Cutting the Vasilopita

Every January 1st, it is Greek custom that families gather to cut a traditional sponge cake called Vasilopita. January 1st is Saint Basil (Vasili) Day, so the cake is named in honor of this Patron Saint, and everyone with the name Vasili or Vasiliki is celebrated. What makes this cake so special is the one ingredient that everyone looks for ... a special coin hidden and baked somewhere inside. As the head of the household cuts the cake, every piece gets offered to a specific family member and the one who ends up with the coin is said to have lots of luck in the New Year.

This year, at the Christopoulos family gathering for the cutting of the Vasilopita, the lucky family member to receive the coin was our Grandmother Stamatina who is in town visiting from Greece!

The food is always superb, friendly and attentive service and nothing can beat the warmth of your family atmosphere." Stacey Moore
