The Day of the Panagia - August 15th

This national Greek holiday is largely celebrated by Greeks worldwide in honor of the Virgin Mary and all who share her name, including: Panagioti (Peter), Panagiota (Pam), and Mary or Maria. It is the largest Greek summer holiday and the 2nd largest overall religious Greek holiday after Easter. Festivals all through Greece ensue, especially at the churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary. On the island of Tinos, this day is celebrated like nothing else as thousands of believers travel there to visit the island's church, Panagia Evangelistria - Our lady of good tidings (pictured below) and pay respects to the icon of the Virgin Mary which is dated even before the Byzantine era. The most devoted Greek Orthodox followers crawl on their knees up the many church stairs to pray and pay their respects. The festivals that take place are all-day affairs that that include your typical Greek roasts of lamb and pig. Dancing and drinking as live music plays keeps the crowds of people out till all hours of the night honoring this most respected Saint in the Greek Orthodox Church.

The church's stairs are made of magnificent marble and the courtyard consists of offices, chapels, a health station and 7 museums. Inside the church, one must often wait in line to see the small jewel-adorned icon of the Virgin Mary. Worshippers frequently bring gifts of gratitude to decorate the icon.
