Mediterranean Scallops

You requested, we responded! We're always happy to listen to your monthly food special ideas, so please keep them coming.

Our original recipe complements these tender scallops perfectly! The scallops are prepared in a sautee of fresh mushrooms and artichoke hearts, finished off with white wine, garlic and herbs. They are then served over rice pilaf and sprinkled with some feta cheese for an added boost of flavor! Enjoy a Greek salad with all the trimmings (romaine lettuce, feta cheese, olives, tomatoes, green peppers, red onions, cucumbers and our famous Greek dressing) and our house garlic bread before hand.

Suggested Wine: Makedonikos White Wine

Greece in August is Alive with Spirit!

With the end of the summer months around the corner, August is a busy month for Greece as tourists and locals alike make the most of the summer weather. August is the month when almost all Greeks take their vacation, heading from the big cities to their hometown villages or the beaches and islands. If you're looking for a  high energy escape, the party scene is also at its peak in August as September's return to school and work is looming right around the corner. There are plenty of festivals to keep everyone busy having a great time in August. The Patras City Festival is one of the biggest in attendance but either small or large, most towns in Greece take advantage of the great crowds in August to showcase the best of Greek culture with food, live music and dancing. On the island of Aegina, people join to party at the International Music Festival. Grape harvest festivals are also underway on such islands like Samos and Rhodes that both host major festivals. For something a little out of the ordinary, people take part in Full Moon Festivals. The Greek government grants permission to people to stay after hours at certain archeological sites, like the Acropolis, to view the beauty of history under a bright white full moon.

Olive Oil Benefits

One of the main ingredients in most Greek dishes is olive oil. It is one of the healthy monounsaturated fats, may actually lower bad cholesterol and is known  to lower sugar levels and blood pressure. The Greek or Mediterranean diet has been credited with being one of the healthiest worldwide, largely due to the widespread usage of olive oil, but also to the consumption of many fresh fruits, vegetables and grains. Medical studies indicate that in countries where olive oil consumption is high, cardiovascular problems are less than in other countries. Olive oil also contains antioxidants such as Vitamin E and carotenoids which help contribute to its nutritional benefits.

It's easy to incorporate olive oil in all aspects of cooking from hot to cold foods, from sauteing vegetables and grilling meats to tossing salads and making dressings. In addition to the internal benefits of olive oil, it is also a popular choice as a moisturizer for skin and can be found in certain skin care products.

FUN FACT: In ancient Greece, athletes ritually rubbed olive oil all over their bodies and Homer called it "liquid gold."

August 15th - National Greek Holiday

This day is a big religious holiday in Greece as Greeks celebrate the Festival of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This date on the Greek Orthodox calendar marks the moment when the Virgin Mary, or Theotokos, ascended into Heaven. Greeks prepare for this holiday with a two week fast from certain foods lasting from August 1st and ending on the 15th. The fast ends with huge parties all over Greece, dancing, live music and a big feast of roasted lamb or pig. It is tradition for the Greeks living in the large cities to return to their hometown villages and reconnect with parents, grandparents, extended family and friends. Also, everyone with the first name of Panagiotis (Peter), Panagiota (Pam) or Maria celebrate their name day on August 15th.
