GREEK CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

Although Easter is the most celebrated Greek religious holiday, Christmas is very festive and devotedly celebrated throughout the entire country.

To Greek Orthodox followers, Saint Nicholas, the Patron Saint of Sailors, is honored during the Christmas season. Additionally, on Christmas day, anyone with a name that includes "Christ" in it, is celebrated and brought gifts. For example: Christina, Christopher or Christos.

The celebration starts Christmas Eve when people all over Greece attend church services and visit each other's homes singing "kalanda" or carols.

Of course, no Greek holiday is complete without a great meal to feast on and enjoy with family and friends. Pig and lamb are commonly roasted and accompanied by loaves of Christopsomo (homemade Christ bread) and lots of wine - OPA!
