THANKSGIVING FOOD FACTS

Thanksgiving is a century old tradition celebrated by many countries around the world and typically held after the fall harvest. Communities would hold 3-day feasts, sharing meats, bread and beer with everyone. Today, Thanksgiving is one of the most celebrated holidays in the US!

So, what did the pilgrims really eat???

Although historians still aren't exactly sure what food was exchanged and consumed on the first Thanksgiving, it's safe to say that pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes probably weren't on the menu. According to History.com, below are 2 lists of what the pilgrims allegedly ate and didn't eat:

What was on the menu:

Seafood: Cod, Eel, Clams, Lobster
Wild Fowl: Wild Turkey, Goose, Duck, Crane, Swan, Partridge, Eagles
Meat: Venison, Seal
Grain: Wheat Flour, Indian Corn
Fruit & Vegetables: Plums, Grapes, Pumpkin, Peas, Beans, Onions, Lettuce, Radishes, Carrots
Nuts: Walnuts, Chestnuts, Acorns
Herbs/Seasonings: Olive Oil, Liverwort, Leeks, Dried Currants, Parsnips

What wasn't on the menu:

Ham: although pigs were brought over from England, there is no evidence that any were eaten
Sweet Potatoes/Potatoes: these were not common at the time
Corn on the cob: corn was kept dried out this time of year
Cranberry Sauce: the pilgrims had cranberries, but no sugar
Pumpkin Pie: no recipe for this dessert has been found to exist at the time of the 1st Thanksgiving feast
Chicken/Eggs: it is unknown how many hens were left at this point from the pilgrims arrival and if the hens were still laying eggs
Milk: no cows were aboard the Mayflower, although the pilgrims may have used goat milk to make cheese
