Mother's Day - May 13th, 2007

Come celebrate Mother's Day with us this year!  We will be featuring a fresh fish special and a lamb dinner special.  We will be serving breakfast from 8AM - 12noon and then featuring our dinner menu from 12noon - closing.

 History of Mother's Day

The earliest celebrations of Mother's Day can be traced back to Ancient Greece when they held spring celebrations in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, who was also the mother of Zeus.  Mother's Day festivities started in 1872 in the United States, when Julia Ward Howe suggested that the day be dedicated to peace.  Ana Jarvis furthered the cause in 1907 by writing to business men and politicians to officially declare the 2nd Sunday in May "Mother's Day".  Ana did this in honor of the second anniversary of her mother's death, which happened to fall on the 2nd Sunday of May that year.  Through Ana's persistence and with the help of her supporters, President Woodrow Wilson made it official in 1914, proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday to be celebrated each year on the 2nd Sunday in May!

May Celebrations in Greece

  • May 1st - Labor Day and Feast of the Flowers ("Protomayia")

This national holiday is celebrated with parades and festivities throughout Greece and its islands.  The feast of the Flowers is a springtime celebration of flowers and is celebrated by picknicking in the countryside and picking large bouquets of fresh flowers to decorate the home.

  • May 21st - The feast of Saint Constantine and his mother Saint Eleni

This is a day which celebrates the first pro-Orthodox Byzantine rulers.  Everyone with the name of Constantine or Eleni (Helen) is celebrated on this day.  In certain Macedonian villages, celebrations include fire walking ceremonies!

Day of Remembrance

Memorial Day is May 28th this year.  Originally called "Decoration Day", this day commemorates those who have bravely lost their lives honoring and serving our country.  Memorial day was officially proclaimed on May 5th, 1868 by General John Logan and was first observed on May 30th that same year.
